The future of Americans could be jeopardized because of what they say on social media. People in America have become so indulged in social media, that they do not even realize what they are posting online and how it will impact their futures. Americans, especially teenagers, do not realize that what they post on social media will be viewed by their potential employers. Teenagers do not understand that what they say or post online will stick with them forever, even if they delete the post. Then, when applying for a job, the potential employer will look at all of the candidates social media accounts. When they do this they are looking for multiple different aspects that can negatively impact their chances to get a job. These aspects include improper grammar or spelling, drug use, alcohol abuse, or other illegal or frowned upon activities. In addition to the things posted, a potential employer may do some research on social media of who their friends are and how their friends act. Not only does social media impact the chances of getting a job, it also negatively impacts the productivity at the workplace. Just spending 30 minutes a day on social media while at work could cost a 50-person company 6,500 hours of productivity in a year (GFI Software). This is an astonishing fact that expresses a truth about America today. The decrease in productivity in the workplace impacts the revenue and success of companies, therefore employers would not want to hire people attached to social media.
